Buildings & Grounds We provide a safe, comfortable and clean environment for students and staff by cleaning, maintaining and when appropriate, improving our buildings and grounds. In all, we are responsible for more than million square feet of facilities and more than acres of land. The Office of Buildings and Grounds (B&G) provides timely and cost-effective facilities solutions and services to the Columbus City Schools Community that meet the expectations for quality. B&G provides professional support to the faculty, staff, and students in pursuit of the CCS Mission.

The CAPE was derived from previous studies that showed a positive relationship between a particular building condition and student achievement and behavior, including air-conditioning, classroom illumination, temperature control, classroom color, graffiti, science equipment and utilities, paint schedules, roof adequacy, classroom windows, floor type, building age, supporting facilities, condition of school grounds. A meeting was arranged in Clinton IA to discuss the concept. From that meeting the Iowa Schools Buildings and Grounds Association (ISBGA) was born. The group decided to concentrate on the following items: Create an organization for school buildings and grounds supervisors to collaborate on common issues related to school problems and concerns.

Each building’s plans are available and can be viewed at the Buildings & Grounds Office at the Savage Center during normal business hours. Questions concerning the AHERA plan should be addressed to the Director of Buildings & Grounds, who is the designated person for AHERA matters at () Buildings and Grounds also oversees the custodial staff at all 22 schools and the Administrative Center. Buildings and Grounds is responsible for the overall physical condition of the buildings, working with District Administrators, Principals, Head Custodians, District Architect to determine and prioritize major renovation and replacement needs.
